From the Executive Director

The agenda for the 6th ECCMA International Product and Service Cataloging Conference and Exhibition has been finalized. As you will see from the details in the agenda, this year?s conference will be packed with information and will offer a true learning experience for everyone.

If you plan on attending and have not already registered, please do so as the conference is filling up rapidly. In addition, if you plan to stay at the Hotel Hershey, we recommend you make your reservations as the number of rooms reserved for the conference is running low.

There is still space available for those interested in being an Exhibitor at the conference. October 6th is the deadline for exhibitor registration however, we recommend you register as soon as possible to ensure you are included in the conference program and all of the pre-conference press releases.

The attendee and exhibitor registration forms are available on the Conference page of the ECCMA website. There you will also find information on the surrounding areas and special events happening during the conference as well as travel, and lodging accommodations.

This session is traditionally the ISO liaison plenary where industry consortia and other standards organizations that work with SC4 standards present updates on their projects. The presenters will be focusing on the importance of protecting the intrinsic value of data as a primary management responsibility. They will be addressing the use of ISO standards to preserve the separation of data from applications in various sectors as well as how the ISO standards address the challenge of long term data retention.

10:30-12:00: ECCMA panel presentation - CATALOGING AT SOURCE


This session will address the need for standardized metadata to support Data Integration across the Supply chain from design to disposal. The session will include an update on the NATO cataloging at source projects as well as the implementation of standards for cataloging product and service by both suppliers and buyers. The session will include a presentation on the value of data quality in general and specifically labeling metadata to create standardized descriptions that can be easily integrated into an ERP system.

This is an opportunity to visit with application and service providers from a range of companies that provide solutions that support the implementation of ISO standards. 13:00-17:00: ECCMA CONTENT STANDARDIZATION COUNCIL MEETINGS

The ECCMA Content Standardization Councils are industry groups responsible for the development of eOTD Identification Guides and terminology that support the needs of their specific industry sectors. Currently the Natural Resources Industry and the Services Industry Councils have indicated that they will be conducting meetings to review the progress of their work.

ISO STANDARDS DEVELOPMENT MEETINGS

ISO standards developers will be meeting in regular working group sessions. A detailed meeting schedule for the day is available at the meeting office; a short list of the meetings is as follows:

ISO 10303 Manufacturing Implementers Forum: This session consists of a joint meeting between the WG3 T24 (Manufacturing) standards developers and the implementers of the manufacturing application protocols (AP) of ISO 10303. The meeting will include a review of automotive industry AP238 implementation testing and AP239 demonstrations.

WG3 T8 (Furniture): Continued development of ISO 10303 application protocols for the furniture industry.

WG3 T22 (Building and Construction): Discussion of issues relating to building and construction as well as building services, piping and civil engineering in NWI 241 on life cycle support.

WG12 Shared Resources - modules: Review of shared resources development and coordination to include meetings on parametric modules for ISO 10303 AP203 Ed 2.

WG3 T23 (Shipbuilding): NSRP project reports, implementation forum, part libraries, integration of lifecycle data, joint meeting with T 22 building and construction.

SC4 Maintenance Agency: Review of procedures for the maintenance of SC4 standards as databases.

ECCMA WORKSHOPS

a. eOTD Cataloging: A workshop focusing on the fundamentals of cataloging products and services using the eOTD to include preparing the data, adding the class, identifying properties and abstracting property values, including a demonstration of the community edition of the eOTD Catalog builder.
b. eOTD data models: A technical workshop on the eOTD data models designed for application developers wishing to integrate the eOTD into their applications. The workshop includes a review of the eOTD Web Services interface and will include worked examples.

c. Managing a data cleaning project: A workshop focused on discussing strategies for costing and managing projects to clean and maintain material, service and vendor masters.
d. ECCMA Global Item Registry: A review of the EGIR and the ECCMA Stock Number (ESN), including bulk upload and web services integration. The workshop will also address integrating the ESN into an ERP system as externally hosted characteristic data. Time permitting the workshop will also address managing diminishing manufacturing sources, including using characteristic data to define functional equivalence.

e. Inventory rationalization: A workshop reviewing the fundamental expectations of an inventory rationalization project, how to design, cost and implement an inventory rationalization project. The workshop will discuss strategies for obtaining data, including a review of integrating distributed eOTD encoded XML catalogs and localization considerations. The workshop will also cover contracting for data as part of acquisition and provisioning agreements.
f. Automatic identification and data capture (AIDC): A workshop reviewing the current development in UID and RFID standards and their applications in integrating supply chain data. The workshop will review data resolution and data cashing alternatives.

g. Data quality and spend analysis: A review of procedures and processes for evaluating and managing data quality. The workshop will include applying classifications for spend analysis reporting to include a review of the relative cost and benefits of classifying vendor masters, material masters and transactional data.
h. eOTD Identification Guides: A workshop on the development and modification of eOTD Identification Guides using the on-line editor. Will include a review of the use of eOTD Identification guides as XML templates for cataloging and query applications.

WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 25, 2006

08:00-10:00: Joint session with ISO TC/184 SC4 ? PROTECTING DATA AS A FUNDAMENTAL BUSINESS ASSET
HOWARD MASON

Howard Mason is responsible for information standards and engineering business solutions in the Corporate IT Office of BAE Systems, including corporate implementations of the STEP standard for projects and links to customers.

As Chairman of ISO TC184/SC4, he leads the ISO activities on industrial data, and has been involved in the STEP standard since its inception in 1984. He is a Board member of the PDES, Inc consortium for accelerating the industrial implementation of STEP, and Co-chair of the OASIS PLCS Technical Committee, which is exploiting extensions to STEP to cover the complete product lifecycle.

He chairs the Management Group for the MoU between ISO, IEC, ITU and UN/CEFACT with responsibility for coordination of Electronic Business standards worldwide, and is a member of the corresponding UK organization.

He is a member of the leadership team of the US aerospace industry Electronic Enterprise Integration Committee, which recommends eBusiness standards for industry adoption.

Other standards activities include the chairmanship of the European CEN Technical Committee TC310 on Advanced Manufacturing Technologies, and membership of the BSI ICT Coordination Strategy Committee, which is responsible for all information and communications technology standardization in the UK.

STEVEN RAY (NIST)

Steven R. Ray is Chief, Manufacturing Systems Integration Division at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. He is responsible for the management of a division of roughly 60 staff and visiting researchers dedicated to the solution of national problems related to measurements and standards supporting systems interoperation in the manufacturing sector. He had previously led a group that addressed integration issues related to manufacturing process planning, exchange and communication standards, integration architectures, and collaborative engineering technologies. He established a new program (TIMA - Technologies for the Integration of Manufacturing Applications) on detail assignment to the NIST Advanced Technology Program, and served for one year as Chairman of the IGES/PDES Organization that coordinated the U.S. participation in the creation of the STEP product data standard (STEP - Standard for the Exchange of Product Model Data, ISO 10303). Dr. Ray has twice been awarded the Department of Commerce Bronze Medal. He received his Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in 1981 from Princeton University, and his Bachelor's degree in Physics from the University of Bristol, England.

JACK HARRIS (ROCKWELL COLLINS)

Jack Harris is the Director of Advanced Manufacturing Technology for Rockwell Collins. In this capacity he is responsible for the strategic direction of manufacturing technology and process development. This includes the alignment of business unit needs with manufacturing capabilities at over a dozen manufacturing locations.

Jack holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering and a MS in Engineering Management. Prior to joining Rockwell Collins, he served in the USAF. His career at Rockwell Collins spans over thirty years, where he has been involved in avionics product development, and has held a number of leadership positions in design, advanced technology engineering and manufacturing operations. In 1993, he was awarded the Collins Pioneer Leadership award for development and implementation of a computer aided engineering strategy for Commercial Avionics Engineering. He has championed the development and implementation of Product Model Data Standards at Rockwell Collins.

Jack is involved in number of local and national industry consortia steering boards, focused on collaborative R&D and enhancing engineering education. He was instrumental in the launch of Iowa?s Advanced Manufacturing Research and Collaboration Cluster (AMRCC), and served as the AMRCC board chairman from 1999-2002. He currently chairs the Consortium for Advanced Management International (CAM-I) Board of Directors. He was the initial board chairman for the Integrated Manufacturing Technology Initiative (IMTI) in 2000, and is the current President and Board of Directors Chairman for PDES Inc. Jack also serves on a number of academic advisory boards, including chairing the Advisory Board for the University of Iowa?s Center for Computer Aided Design (CCAD).

He is married with two grown children, and enjoys running, volleyball, golf and restoring Datsun 280Z sports cars.

JOHN CLARK* (UK MINISTRY OF DEFENCE)

Mr. John Clark was born in Johnstone, Scotland in December 1951. He joined the UK Ministry of Defence based in Scotland in a junior grade in February 1969 before transferring to a London post with the First Sea Lord's office in 1972. From there he was promoted through a number of logistics posts in the United Kingdom, Germany and the Falkland Islands involving Infrastructure Projects, Transport Management, Vehicle Fleet Management, Training and Logistics IT systems. He graduated from the 1990 Staff Course at the Royal Naval Staff College in London.

His more recent appointments include being the first National Distribution Manager for the Navy with responsibility for freight and passenger transport as well as repair and maintenance. He was appointed to membership of the Institute of Logistics and Transport in 1995.

John joined the UK National Codification Bureau in the Operational Management role in 1996, becoming the Business Manager in 1999, before assuming command of the organization in January 2000. As the UK Member of NATO Allied Committee 135, he undertook the duties of Chairman of the Technical Panel from September 1997 to March 2001 and became Chairman of the AC/135 Main Group in 2002.

RICK MAISON (DEFENSE LOGISTICS INFORMATION SERVICE)

Mr. Richard B. Maison became the Deputy of the Defense Logistics Information Service (DLIS) in January 1999. In this position, he serves as the organization?s Executive Director and senior civilian. He also is the U.S. Representative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Allied Codification Committee 135, the Group of National Directors of Codification, responsible for NATO Codification System (NCS) policy and data exchange standards used by some fifty nations around the world. He currently serves as chairman of the group.

Mr. Maison began his career at DLIS in 1991 as Chief of the International Codification Division. During his tenure, he led the development of an automated data entry system for NATO codification that resulted in significant improvements in productivity and decreases in backlog and that was awarded Vice-President Gore?s Hammer Award. He served as U.S. Representative to NATO AC/135 Panel A and was elected as its Chairman in 1994 and re-elected in 1996. He also organized and led the successful 8th NATO Symposium on Codification in May, 1997 in San Diego. It was the first ever held in the United States and brought in 450 attendees from over 40 countries around the world.

In 1997, he was selected as the Program Manager for the DOD Cataloging Transition Office, charged with consolidating and centralizing at DLIS all DOD cataloging workload being performed within each Military Service at more than a dozen activities across the U.S. The centralization was successfully completed ahead of schedule and led to his being awarded the DLA Superior Civilian Service Award.

He began his Federal career in 1976 at the Air Force Cataloging and Standardization Center (CASC) as a supply cataloger. In 1981, he became a branch chief, and in 1984, a division chief in functional cataloging areas. He served as the Chief of Resources Management Division at CASC beginning in 1986 and became the Director of Program Management in 1988, serving in that position until joining DLIS.

Mr. Maison has an Associate degree from Macomb County Community College, Warren, MI., a Bachelor of Arts degree (cum laude) and a Master degree in Public Administration from Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Michigan. Mr. Maison and his wife Mary have two children, Rachel and David.

CHRIS HAYDEN* (QUADREM)

Chris's present role is Vice President, Marketplace Operations for Quadrem. Chris is responsible for Quadrem's eMarketplace applications and operations - from the hosted buyer and seller applications, supplier integration, content strategy and solutions, and the business warehouse. In addition to the development and deployment of Quadrem's product and solutions, the role is also responsible for Quadrem's customer support center and training initiatives. Prior to joining Quadrem in late 2000, Chris worked for Comalco Ltd. in Australia. Chris has over 8 years experience in procurement strategy, purchasing, logistics, strategic sourcing, content and business operations, from both a site and corporate level. Chris has a degree in Business - Information Management from the Queensland University of Technology.

ECCMA WORKSHOPS

JOSEPH CASSEL* (EDS)

Joe Cassel served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 26 years with capstone assignments as the Commander, Defense Logistics Information Service (DLIS) in Battle Creek, Michigan and as the Director of Logistics, First Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, California. His tenure at DLIS included successful organization changes, business process re-engineering, large enterprise information technology upgrades, new development in Defense Department-wide asset visibility and data quality efforts and national recognition for e-government and tele-working initiatives. DLIS leads international cataloging as well as manages the Federal Catalog System. While at First Marine Division, he led logistics planning to include supply, transportation, maintenance, finance, and logistics IT systems for the global war on terror and the deployment, maintenance and sustainment for operations in Iraq.

In addition to leadership assignments at every rank and deployed operations in Beirut, Lebanon (1983), Liberia (1993), Rwanda (1994), the Philippines evacuation (1991), the Middle East (2000) he also did systems development work in maintenance management and wholesale inventory systems, initiated quality assurance for warehousing data, developed provisioning measures for new ground equipment, stood up and managed a huge desert logistics equipment training effort, and implemented bar code technology to simulate deployments. He was the recipient of numerous team awards and 10 personal decorations culminating in the Defense Superior Service Medal.

Joe Cassel is a S.O.L.E Certified Professional Logistician, he earned a B.A. at West Chester State University, PA, a M.S. from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California as well as masters degrees in residence from both the Naval and Army War College. Also a master's equivalent, the National Defense University certified him as a Federal CIO in 2005. He and his family reside in central Pennsylvania where he is an executive with Electronic Data Systems (EDS).

PETER BENSON* (ECCMA)

Executive Director and Chief Technical Officer of the Electronic Commerce Code Management Association (ECCMA), Peter is an expert in distributed information systems and content encoding. Peter served (1994-1998) as the elected chairman of the American National Standards Institute Accredited Committee ANSI ASCX 12E, the standards committee responsible for the development and maintenance of EDI standard for product data.

As an early innovator in the use of electronic mail systems for database management, Peter was granted a landmark British patent on the use of store and forward networks to maintain distributed databases. Peter designed one of the very first commercial electronic mail software applications, WordStar Messenger. He also designed and oversaw the development of a number of strategic distributed database management systems used extensively in the UK and US by the Public Relations and Media Industries. Peter played a key role in the development and global promotion of the UNSPSC; he is an expert in cataloging systems that he believes are critical in an e-Business environment. Peter in an internationally recognized proponent of Open Standards.

Peter Benson holds a French Baccalaureate in Mathematics and Physics, a bachelor's degree in Agriculture and a Master's degree in Marketing from London University. Peter has four children and lives in Pennsylvania.

DON BROWN* (PARTNET)

Dr. Don Brown is the CEO and Founder of PartNET, an enterprise software firm that automates supply chain interactions for over ten years. He was also Executive Vice President for Engineering at Medibuy (now Global Health Exchange), a leading B2B exchange of supplies and equipment for hospitals. Dr. Brown served as a tenured faculty member at the University of Utah as Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Adjunct Associate Professor of Computer Science. There he received several awards for a commercial product that rehabilitates young cerebral palsy patients. Previously, Dr. Don Brown was a member of the Schlumberger Palo Alto Research technical staff, a lab that pioneered work in artificial intelligence. He has authored or co-authored over 27 technical publications and is an inventor or co-inventor on 9 patents or patents pending. He holds a B.S. degree from the University of Utah and was awarded M.S. and PhD degrees by Stanford University.

DON HILLMAN* (LEHIGH UNIVERSITY)

Mr. Donald Hillman is a professor in the Computer Science and Engineering division of Lehigh University. He has held several other positions inside the University including Director of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Director for the Center for Information & Computer Science, Head of the Division of Information Sciences as well as Associate and Research positions. His professional experience includes the role of current President of Systems Technology Corporation. He was also a member of the Information Systems Task Force of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Regional Editor of Information Systems, Pergamon Press, a member of the Metals Information Committee, American Society of Metals, Member of the Science Information Council and Chairman of the Biomedical Study Section of the National Institutes of Health.

Mr. Hillman has done consulting projects with Bethlehem Steel, Oak Ridge National Laboratories, Naval Ship Research and Development Center, Institute Exxon, Institute for Scientific Information and Arthur D.Little, Ford Foundation. He has received recognition of achievements and been awarded contracts for the following: Ben Franklin Advanced Technology Center (10 awards), North American Treaty Organization (2 awards), U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research (3 awards), National Science Foundation (17 awards). Other honors and awards include: National Academy of Sciences Manufacturing, U.S. State Department Representative, Ford Foundation Representative to the University of the Philippines, Fellow, NATO Institute for Advanced Study (The Hague, Netherlands), Fellow, NATO Institute for Advanced Study (Venice, Italy), Robinson Award, Lehigh University and National Science Foundation Travel Fellowships. He also developed software for the Federal Aviation Administration, Hilton Systems and the Naval Air Warfare Center in China Lake, CA. Mr. Hillman received his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. in Mathematical Logic from Cambridge University.

ROB MACEWAN* (RIVERSAND TECHNOLOGIES)

Rob MacEwan is the Director of Content Operations at Riversand Technologies. In his current role, Rob is responsible for leading the Content Services Organization for Riversand. Rob has over 20 years experience in the Oil & Gas Industry. His specialty is working with the buyer and supplier communities to develop and maintain catalogs and standards for their ebusiness applications. Prior to joining Riversand Technologies Rob was Senior Manager, Content Integration for the Trade Ranger marketplace where he participated in developing catalog strategies for their buying members. Rob also spent the last 5 of his 16 years with Chevron?s Global Procurement Organization as part of a team that engaged with suppliers for a corporate wide procurement initiative.

BERN WERNER* (BCI DATA)

Bern is a former Marine Corps Officer. During his six-year career he served in a variety of leadership and technical project management positions. A 1988 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he led a team of marines through systems testing of a state-of-the-art command and control (C2) system now in use by the Marine Corps, U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard. He spent his last two years of service as an instructor at the Marine Corps Communications & Electronics School, teaching communications theory, system maintenance and operation.

In 1994, after leaving the military, Bern joined Management Science Associates and was involved in the implementation of a large Supply Chain data management system for a Fortune 10 CPG customer. The system involved the collection, cleaning, and data warehousing of terabytes of information for large CPG companies. In recognition of his achievements, he was promoted to Group Director and rapidly grew the business into the most profitable division of the company.

In 1998 Bern co-founded Innovative Resource Group, Inc. (IRG), an information management business which grew to more than 150 employees in just three years while maintaining both profits and revenue growth. IRG was purchased and then merged with iGate Global Solutions Ltd (IGS), an independent operating company of iGate Corporation. iGate has more than 4,000 employees and 30 offices on 5 continents.

Bern has extensive experience in data warehousing and has consulted with banking and retail clients on large-scale CRM implementations.

STEVEN ARNETT (DEFENSE LOGISTICS INFORMATION SERVICE)

Steven Arnett is deputy chief of the international division at the Defense Logistics Information Service (DLIS) in Battle Creek, Michigan. Before being appointed to that position in June 2004, Mr. Arnett managed international policies and procedures for 15 years for DLIS. He has represented the United States at many meetings of NATO Allied Committee 135, the organization responsible for managing the NATO Codification System (NCS). He has been designated by AC/135 to represent the committee on the ECCMA Open Technical Dictionary (eOTD) project. Mr. Arnett received a bachelor?s degree in humanities in 1973 from Michigan State University and a master?s degree in English literature from the University of Maine in 1978.

SHERON KOSHY (ECCMA)

TIM THOMAS (PARTSOLUTIONS)

Tim is the Chief Executive Officer (1999), of PART-solutions, LLC; he has twenty four years of CAD/CAM/CAE technology development and application experience. Previously he spent thirteen years at Structural Dynamics Research Corporation (SDRC) where he was the Director of CAD Development, Director of CAD Support, and Manager, Quality Assurance. He was the Chief Operating Officer and VP Operations at Computer Aided Systems for Engineering (CASE) where he was responsible for all aspects of the drafting software business until CASE was acquired by SDRC in 1998. Tim?s career also included working as a design engineer at Hughes Aircraft, TRW and Goodyear. Tim has a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan Technological University and is co-chairman of the mechanical engineering industry advisory board.

ELAINE CHAPMAN (DLIS)

Elaine Chapman has worked for the Defense Logistics Information Service for 22 years. Currently, she is the Chief of the Data Integrity Branch. Under her supervision, her team has developed a robust data quality manual and modernized the tracking system to support the initiative. Prior to working quality issues, she was the program manager for the Hazardous Materials Information Resource System (HMIRS), worked as a program manager for various Federal Logistics Information System (FLIS) data elements and worked in the Office of Test and Evaluation (OT&E) during FLIS Modernization. She received her Bachelors degree from Michigan State University and her Masters from Spring Arbor University.

JOHN ANDREWS (ENDECA)

John Andrews leads Endeca's Manufacturing & Distribution business, which includes marquee customers such as John Deere, Texas Instruments, IBM, Arrow Electronics, and Premier Farnell. John has spent his career assisting manufacturing organizations meet their strategic and operational objectives as it relates to product strategy, product data/lifecycle management, and B2B eCommerce. John currently leads Endeca's Manufacturing & Distribution practice in assisting manufacturers to integrate, discover, navigate and analyze data to solve the business problems associated with information overload. Prior to joining Endeca, John was a Manager at Deloitte Consulting where he led Product Innovation & Lifecycle Management and IT Strategy projects for Manufacturing clients such as Philips Medical Systems, Haemonetics, Digital Equipment Corporation, and Compaq. John holds a BA in Economics and Computer Science from Boston College and received his masters degree from the Harvard Business School.
